EDF, as the world leading Electricity Company, is an integrated group which operates across the entire energy value chain, from upstream to downstream activities. Sustainability is one of the major focus of the company’s strategy and over 20% of the R&D budget is spent on climate change combat and environmental protection. With more than 2 000 researchers all over the world, EDF is at the cutting edge of many scientific topics, among which sustainable urban development and energy in urban sectors. In 2014, EDF launched the EDF Lab Singapore and the EDF Asian Sustainable Cities Center of Excellence (with the support of EDB) in Singapore to enhance its research program within the highly innovative and ground breaking environment of the city-state. EDF Lab Singapore is working closely with the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to help reach the target of smart and sustainable town planning. EDF Lab Singapore, with the help of EDF R&D, have developed the urban decision support platform EDF City Platform, also called CAVI (City Application and Visual Interface). It embeds all the knowhow of EDF on the topics of energy in the city, environmental modelling, economic analysis and systemic approach. The platform has been developed in a modular way to be able to be enhanced and integrate new development. The platform EDF City Platform is tested by HDB for the refurbishment of mature estates (Yuhua, Jurong East) and the new development of new towns (Punggol). The Add New Neighborhood (ANN) functionality of CAVI allows HDB to upload any HDB neighborhood of Singapore and simulate scenarios of planning.
EDF Lab Singapore is also involved in various research projects and learning programs with the main local universities: NUS, SUTD, NTU, SIT, ESSEC, developing innovative topics like, among others, Integrated Sustainable Design, agent based modeling of populations, micro grids, 3D modelling or ecosystem services review.
